Resolution on unjustly imprisoned Uyghurs, including Ilham Tohti and Gulshan Abbas

EP Position

The European Parliament strongly condemns the PRC’s violations of the human rights of Uyghurs and other people in China and urges the immediate and unconditional release of Ilham Tohti and Gulshan Abbas, guarantees of medical care and legal access, information on their whereabouts and family visiting rights, and EU and Member State pressure at every high-level contact. It calls for additional sanctions against high-ranking officials and entities involved in human-rights violations and demands an end to abusive policies, including intense surveillance, forced labour, sterilisation and birth-prevention measures, and the closure of internment camps.

Key Trade Point

The Parliament welcomes the EU’s forced labour regulation, insists on its full implementation and calls on businesses operating in the PRC, particularly in the XUAR, to comply with their human-rights due diligence obligations.

What Comes Next

The Parliament instructs its President to forward the resolution to the PRC authorities, the VP/HR, the Commission, the Member States and the United Nations.
