Parliament resolution on political prisoners in Venezuela

Decision

The European Parliament adopted resolution P9_TA(2024)0161 on 14 March 2024 under procedure 2024/2618(RSP) addressing the cases of Rocío San Miguel, General Hernández Da Costa and other political prisoners in Venezuela.

What Changes

The resolution strongly condemns the Maduro regime for imprisoning over 300 political prisoners and deplores detention conditions that contravene the UN Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners. It demands the immediate unconditional release and full restoration of rights of all political prisoners, calls on the Vice‑President/High Representative and the Council to increase sanctions including against high‑level officials, members of the security forces, the Supreme Tribunal of Justice and Maduro himself, urges the International Criminal Court to include ongoing violations in its investigation and urges reinstatement of the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights with access to prisons.
