Parliament objects to MON 810 authorisation renewal

Decision

The European Parliament adopted a resolution (P10_TA(2024)0041) on 26 November 2024 objecting to Commission Implementing Decision (EU) 2024/1828, which renewed the authorisation for the placing on the market of feed containing, consisting of and of food and feed products produced from genetically modified maize MON 810. The resolution records that the Standing Committee and the Appeal Committee delivered no opinion and refers to the European Food Safety Authority’s favourable opinion of 30 November 2023 published on 19 January 2024.

What Changes

Parliament concludes that Implementing Decision (EU) 2024/1828 exceeds the Commission’s implementing powers and is not consistent with Union law and calls on the Commission to repeal the Decision. It also urges the Commission to take account of sustainability and international obligations and requests that future draft implementing acts include an explanatory memorandum explaining how they uphold the ‘do no harm’ principle.

Who Is Affected

The resolution concerns the Commission, Member States, EFSA, the applicant Bayer Agriculture BV/Bayer CropScience LP and operators placing MON 810 food and feed on the Union market.
