Parliament Condemns Hong Kong Sentences, Calls for Repeal

Decision

The European Parliament adopted resolution P10_TA(2024)0051 on 28 November 2024, addressing the deterioration of fundamental freedoms in Hong Kong and cases such as Jimmy Lai and the 45 activists convicted under the national security law.

What Changes

The text condemns the sentencing of pro-democracy activists, calls for repeal of the NSL and SNSO and the immediate and unconditional release of activists including Jimmy Lai and Chung, and urges Member States to suspend extradition treaties and consider targeted measures including sanctions, revoking favourable customs treatment and filing an ICJ case; it also calls for an EU legal defence fund and intensified EU prison visits, trial observation and a human rights focal point in Hong Kong.

The resolution concerns the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the People’s Republic of China, EU Member States, pro-democracy activists, journalists and diaspora communities within the EU.
