MEPs and Ukrainian parliamentarians discuss shaping a common European future

Key Message

MEPs and Verkhovna Rada committee chairs reaffirmed their strong commitment to Ukraine’s resilience, democracy and a common European future, and pledged to step up parliamentary cooperation to prepare Ukraine for future EU accession. European Parliament President Roberta Metsola said in a video address that Ukraine’s rightful place is in the European family and that progress on reforms makes it ready for accelerated accession talks.

Context

The second remote inter-committee meeting reviewed ongoing sectoral cooperation across committees and took stock of policy cooperation, touching on post-war economic recovery, infrastructure, energy, sanctions, nature restoration and justice. Since the first inter-committee meeting in April 2023 the Parliament has maintained cross-cutting political and administrative support, and the EU formally opened accession negotiations with Ukraine at the first Intergovernmental Conference in June 2024.

Implications

The meeting signals continued close parliamentary engagement and support for Ukraine’s reform process and EU integration, alongside calls for continued EU assistance including use of frozen Russian assets, justice for war crimes and credible security guarantees.
