EU Council backs regulation to coordinate gas demand reductions
Measure in Brief
The Council has reached a political agreement on a Council Regulation establishing coordinated demand reduction measures for gas, based on the Commission proposal “Save gas for a safe winter.” The measure includes a collective commitment to reduce gas consumption by 15% and foresees the possibility to declare a state of EU alert that can trigger compulsory reductions across Member States.
Who Is Affected
The regulation covers all EU Member States and targets gas consumers including households and industry. The statement links the measure to recent cuts in deliveries by Gazprom through Nord Stream 1 and frames the action as a response to unreliable external supply.
What Comes Next
The Commission says the agreement, reached in record time, will help fill storage ahead of the coming winter and complements REPowerEU steps to diversify supplies, accelerate renewables and improve energy efficiency.
