Commission amends Temporary Crisis Framework to support renewables and decarbonisation

Measure in Brief

The Commission adopted an amendment to the State aid Temporary Crisis Framework, first adopted on 23 March 2022, to add new types of aid supporting investments in renewable energy and measures facilitating the decarbonisation of industrial processes.

Who Is Affected

Member States can set up schemes for investments in renewable energy, including renewable hydrogen, biogas, biomethane, storage and renewable heat, and may support electrification, energy efficiency and switches to renewable or electricity-based hydrogen, either via tenders or direct project support with limits and SME top-ups; sanctioned Russian-controlled entities are excluded. The amendment also raises the limited-amount aid caps to 62,000€ and 75,000€ for agriculture and fisheries and aquaculture respectively, and up to 500,000€ in other sectors.

What Comes Next

Aid under the new renewables and decarbonisation sections may be granted until 30 June 2023, while liquidity support and measures covering increased energy costs remain available until 31 December 2022 and the Commission will assess any need for extension.
