Von der Leyen launches Strategic Dialogue and action plan for EU automotive sector
Main Message
President von der Leyen convened industry leaders, social partners and stakeholders to launch a Strategic Dialogue on the future of the European automotive industry, aiming to produce a comprehensive Action Plan to support the sector. The process will draw on a high-level discussion with 22 key players, a public consultation and four thematic work strands led by Commissioners Hoekstra, Séjourné, Virkkunen and Mînzatu.
Why It Matters
The Commission notes the automotive industry supports over 13 million direct and indirect jobs and contributes approximately €1 trillion to EU GDP, while undergoing a profound transformative shift that requires measures on talent, resources, technological innovation and a pragmatic regulatory framework. The dialogue targets issues such as the clean transition, industrial value chains, digital innovation and skills and social considerations.
What Follows
A public consultation and the four commissioner-led strands will feed into an Action Plan to be presented by Commissioner Tzitzikostas on 5 March, with the Council and European Parliament regularly informed and consulted.
