Parliament adopts position on major reform of EU Customs Code

Process in Brief

The European Parliament adopted its first-reading position on a major reform of the EU Customs Code, approving the text with 486 votes in favour, 19 against and 97 abstentions. The position backs a comprehensive revamp to modernise customs procedures and provide new tools for authorities.

What Is at Stake

The reform addresses the rapid growth of e-commerce and new EU product standards by improving customs’ ability to focus on risky goods, shipments and traders, noting that about 65% of parcels entering the EU are deliberately undervalued. It increases obligations for online platforms to submit shipment information within one day, introduces a trusted trader status with simplified procedures and establishes an EU DataHub to support data sharing and analysis including the use of AI.

Timeline

Parliament adopted its first-reading position and the file will be followed up by the new Parliament after the 6-9 June European elections.
