Parliament adopts ecodesign framework position at first reading

Decision

The European Parliament adopted its position at first reading on 23 April 2024 on the proposal for a regulation establishing a framework for setting ecodesign requirements for sustainable products (A9-0218/2023; P9_TA(2024)0303). It calls on the Commission to refer the matter to Parliament again if it replaces, substantially amends or intends to substantially amend its proposal and instructs its President to forward the position to the Council, the Commission and the national parliaments.

What Changes

The adopted text establishes a framework for setting ecodesign requirements for sustainable products, amends Directive (EU) 2020/1828 and Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 and repeals Directive 2009/125/EC. The position replaces the amendments adopted on 12 July 2023 and, as an agreement was reached between Parliament and Council, corresponds to the final legislative act, Regulation (EU) 2024/1781.

Who Is Affected

The outcome concerns the EU legal framework for sustainable products and involves EU institutions engaged in the legislative process, including the Commission, the Council and national parliaments.
