MEPs hail EU-India free trade and security partnership

Key Message

Leading MEPs welcomed the EU‑India Summit outcomes, saying the free trade agreement and the security and defence partnership demonstrate a commitment to open, rules‑based trade, multilateralism and stronger cooperation. They highlighted economic opportunities for industries such as mechanical engineering, automotive, aerospace and chemicals and stressed commitments to sustainability and respect for human rights while calling for vigilance on implementation.

Context

The 16th EU–India Summit on 27 January in New Delhi concluded negotiations on a free trade agreement linking nearly two billion people and two of the world’s largest economies. Leaders also signed an EU–India security and defence partnership, agreed a memorandum of understanding on mobility, launched negotiations on a security of information agreement and adopted a joint comprehensive strategic agenda titled “Towards 2030.”

Implications

MEPs’ statements signal parliamentary support for closer EU‑India economic and security cooperation and for pursuing a rules‑based global order and multilateral trade governance.
