Genetically modified maize MON 95275: European Parliament resolution

EP Position

The European Parliament considers the draft Commission implementing decision authorising MON 95275 to exceed the Commission’s implementing powers and to be inconsistent with Union law, and calls on the Commission to withdraw the draft, not to authorise the GM crop and to submit a new draft to the committee. It highlights scientific and environmental concerns recorded in the text, including EFSA’s favourable opinion alongside insufficient data to assess unintended genetic effects, read-through sequence activity and off-target impacts, limitations of the field trials, concerns about the RNAi construct and insecticidal proteins, risks of gene flow and inadequately addressed monitoring requirements.

Key Trade Point

The resolution urges the Commission to ensure convergence of standards between the Union and its trade partners in free trade agreement negotiations to meet Union safety standards and notes that the Mercosur agreement may incentivise imports of food and feed containing GMOs from major producers such as Brazil and Argentina.

What Comes Next

The Parliament instructs its President to forward the resolution to the Council, the Commission and the governments and parliaments of the Member States.
