European Media Freedom Act (P9_TA(2024)0137)
Decision
The European Parliament adopted its position at first reading on 13 March 2024 (P9_TA(2024)0137) on the Commission’s proposal for a regulation establishing a common framework for media services in the internal market and amending Directive 2010/13/EU. The position replaces the amendments adopted on 3 October 2023 and, as an agreement was reached with the Council, corresponds to Regulation (EU) 2024/1083.
What Changes
Parliament’s adopted text sets out the legal basis for a Regulation to harmonise rules for media services across the internal market and to amend the existing audiovisual media services directive. Parliament instructed its President to forward the position to the Council, the Commission and national parliaments and requested the Commission to resubmit the file if it substantially amends or replaces its proposal.
Who Is Affected
The measure applies to media services operating in the EU internal market and involves EU institutions and national parliaments that engaged in the procedure.
