EU restricts dental amalgam and mercury-added products

Decision

The European Parliament adopted its position at first reading on 10 April 2024 on the Commission proposal to amend Regulation (EU) 2017/852, recorded as A9-0002/2024 and published as P9_TA(2024)0191. The adopted position replaced amendments of 17 January 2024 and, as an agreement was reached with the Council, corresponds to the final legislative act Regulation (EU) 2024/1849.

What Changes

The position amends Regulation (EU) 2017/852 to subject dental amalgam and other mercury-added products to manufacturing, import and export restrictions, altering the regulatory treatment of these products under the mercury regulation. The Parliament also instructed its President to forward the position to the Council, the Commission and the national parliaments.

Manufacturers, importers and exporters of dental amalgam and other mercury-added products are directly affected by the new restrictions.
