EU launches Strategic Dialogue on automotive industry future

Process in Brief

Commissioner Tzitzikostas has been tasked to develop an EU industrial action plan and the Dialogue will be anchored on regular meetings chaired by President von der Leyen. The first meeting aims to reach a shared view of critical challenges and potential pathways, after which thematic working groups of senior experts will be constituted to develop detailed proposals and report to a senior steering group.

What Is at Stake

The automotive sector provides over 13 million jobs in the EU and contributes around 7 percent of EU GDP, but faces deep structural shifts from technological change, digitalization, decarbonisation, new competitors and a changing geopolitical context. The Dialogue will address priorities such as leadership in batteries, software and autonomous driving, the clean transition, competitiveness and resilience, trade and a more coherent regulatory environment.

Timeline

The first meeting will seek to align on priorities and formulate goals, followed by the establishment of thematic working groups that will regularly report back while the Council and European Parliament are kept informed and consulted.
