EP resolution condemns Jimmy Lai conviction

The European Parliament adopted a resolution B10-2026/2573 (procedure 2026/2573(RSP)), recorded as P10_TA(2026)0018, on 20 January 2026 condemning the conviction and imminent sentencing of Jimmy Lai in Hong Kong.

What Changes

The text strongly condemns the prosecution as politically motivated, calls on the Hong Kong authorities and the People’s Republic of China to immediately release Mr Lai and others detained for peaceful exercise of rights, and calls for repeal of the National Security Law and the SNSO. It also urges the EU Delegation to Hong Kong and Macao to monitor Mr Lai’s situation, stresses that human rights must remain central to EU–China relations and calls for review of Hong Kong’s special trade status.
