EP rejects Venezuela's 5 January 2021 National Assembly
Context
The European Parliament adopted a resolution on 21 January 2021 addressing developments in Venezuela's National Assembly, stating it does not recognise the legitimacy or legality of the National Assembly established on 5 January 2021 and calling for recognition of the constitutional continuation of the 2015 National Assembly and of Juan Guaidó as interim president.
Key Topic
MEPs voted 391 for, 114 against and 177 abstentions to adopt the resolution, which declares the 5 January assembly "fraudulent" on the basis of non-democratic elections, calls for the unconditional and immediate release of more than 350 political prisoners, welcomes the recent extension of EU sanctions, and urges urgent support as agreed at the Donors Conference.
What to Watch
MEPs call on the Council and EU member states to unequivocally recognise Juan Guaidó and the constitutional continuation of the 2015 National Assembly as the next step.
