EP consents to WTO quota adjustment with Egypt

Decision

The European Parliament gave its consent to the conclusion of an Agreement in the form of an Exchange of Letters between the EU and the Arab Republic of Egypt on modification of concessions on all tariff‑rate quotas in EU Schedule CLXXV following the United Kingdom’s withdrawal. The consent is reflected in the draft legislative resolution A9‑0078/2024 and the adopted text P9_TA(2024)0210 after a Committee on International Trade recommendation and a committee vote of 31 in favour, 0 against and 6 abstentions.

What Changes

The Agreement apportions existing WTO tariff‑rate quota volumes between the EU27 and the UK using a joint approach and a methodology described in Regulation (EU) 2019/216, with the Commission empowered to amend apportionment shares. Negotiations with Egypt amended one erga omnes cucumber TRQ, revising the EU27 share to 647 tonnes, and the Exchange of Letters was initialled on 22 May 2023 in Geneva.

Who Is Affected

The measure directly affects the European Union and the Arab Republic of Egypt, the EU27 allocation for the specified cucumber TRQ and the related agricultural tariff‑rate quota arrangements resulting from the UK’s withdrawal.
