Parliament urges release of José Daniel Ferrer, calls for sanctions
EP Position
The European Parliament condemns the Cuban regime's systematic human rights violations and urges the immediate and unconditional release of José Daniel Ferrer García and all persons politically and arbitrarily detained for exercising rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. It condemns torture and inhuman or degrading treatment, calls for families to be granted access to detainees and for victims to be given medical care.
Key Trade Point
The resolution reiterates its call on the Council to apply the EU Global Human Rights Sanctions Regime (the EU Magnitsky Act) and to adopt sanctions against those responsible for persistent human rights violations in Cuba. It also reiterates previous positions regarding the possibility of activating the PDCA's suspension clause given continuous breaches of the agreement's core human rights clauses.
What Comes Next
The Parliament instructed its President to forward the resolution to the Cuban regime, the Vice-President of the Commission/High Representative, the Commission, the Member States, the United Nations and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States.
