Parliament approves rules on plants from new genomic techniques

Decision

On 7 February 2024 the European Parliament voted in plenary on the report linked to COM(2023)0411/C9-0238/2023 and approved the Commission proposal and accompanying amendments, with the majority of votes cast; a separate proposal to reject the Commission proposal was rejected. The plenary also approved a request to refer the file back to the committee responsible for interinstitutional negotiations.

What Changes

As a result, the texts P9_TA(2024)0067 and P9_TA(2024)0325 were adopted in plenary and the matter was referred back to the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety following a referral request under Rule 59(4) by the rapporteur Jessica Polfjärd. This advances the legislative process on plants obtained by certain new genomic techniques and their food and feed.

Who Is Affected

The decision affects the EU legislative framework and is directly relevant to the European Commission and operators in the EU food and feed sector.
