Parliament urges Azerbaijan to release Dr Gubad Ibadoghlu
Decision
The European Parliament adopted the motion for a resolution B9-0370/2023 (text adopted P9_TA(2023)0323) under procedure 2023/2832(RSP) and pursuant to Rule 144, with the document last updated on 12 September 2023.
What Changes
The resolution strongly condemns the politically motivated arrest of Dr Gubad Ibadoghlu, urges Azerbaijani authorities to release him, drop charges and ensure adequate medical treatment, and calls for a prompt investigation into reported ill‑treatment and due process violations including access to lawyers. It also calls on the European Commission to prioritise Azerbaijan’s human rights record in EU relations and links the prospect of closer trade relations to the release of those unfairly imprisoned, while instructing the Parliament President to forward the resolution to EU institutions and Azerbaijani authorities.
