MEPs: Ukraine must be able to strike legitimate military targets in Russia

Process in Brief

The European Parliament adopted a resolution on 19 September with 425 votes in favour, 131 against and 63 abstentions, setting out concerns about current restrictions on Ukraine’s use of supplied ammunition. The text assesses the impact of delivery shortfalls and use limits on Ukraine’s ability to defend itself.

What Is at Stake

MEPs warn that insufficient ammunition deliveries and restrictions on their use risk offsetting prior efforts and deplore a decline in bilateral military aid by EU countries; they call on member states to fulfil their March 2023 commitment to deliver one million rounds and to accelerate delivery of weapons, air defence systems and ammunition, including TAURUS missiles. The resolution also calls for maintaining and extending EU sanctions against Russia, Belarus and third parties providing military or dual-use technologies, for stronger measures against Iran and North Korea, for more listings of Chinese individuals and entities, and for tougher action on sanctions circumvention by EU-based companies and others.

Timeline

The resolution was adopted on 19 September 2024 and the full text is available on the Parliament's texts adopted page.
