EU and Indonesia advance Halal certification recognition

Key development

The European Commission and Indonesia agreed to continue cooperation after a five-day study trip aimed at facilitating Indonesia's recognition of the EU as a single entity for Halal certification and enabling recognition of EU-issued certificates covering activities across several Member States.

Context

The visit addressed the need to facilitate exports to Indonesia of products whose value chains extend across multiple EU countries and sits alongside broader efforts to deepen EU-Indonesia trade ties.

Details

The Indonesian delegation met Commission officials, representatives of EU Member States, and EU-based trade associations and certifiers during two days in Brussels and additional visits to Germany and Denmark, where they examined EU decision-making, single market principles, inspection systems and traceability standards, notably in agri-food and cosmetics.

Next steps

The EU and Indonesia will continue their cooperation to progress enhanced recognition of certificates of compliance, following the negotiations on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement concluded in 2025.
