EP resolution on systemic oppression and arbitrary detentions in Iran
EP Position
The European Parliament expresses solidarity with the Iranian people, deplores the regime’s systematic use of arbitrary detention, torture, extrajudicial killings and the death penalty, and calls for an immediate halt to violence, the abolition of the death penalty and the release of all persons in arbitrary detention, including foreign and dual nationals. It also calls for atrocities to be independently documented by UN bodies, for evidence to be preserved and for accountability through international judicial mechanisms, including for the UN Security Council to refer Iran to the ICC.
Key Trade Point
The Parliament urges the Council and Member States to expand targeted sanctions, including asset freezes and travel bans, against those responsible for the abuses, explicitly naming IRGC members, political leaders, prosecutors and prison and security officials, and calls for enforcement of sanctions and measures to prevent their circumvention.
What Comes Next
The Parliament instructed its President to forward the resolution to the Council, the Commission, the Vice‑President/High Representative, the Member States, the UN and the Iranian authorities.
