MEPs urge deeper EU‑Canada strategic partnership

Key Development

MEPs adopted a resolution urging closer EU-Canada cooperation to address security threats such as Russia’s war in Ukraine, hybrid attacks, terrorism, foreign interference and China’s assertiveness, and called for full implementation of the security and defence partnership and for initiatives like Security Action for Europe (SAFE) and the ReArm Europe plan to complement NATO. The text also urged stepped-up support for Ukraine via the G7 and the Coalition of the Willing, coordinated sanctions and diplomatic action, greater engagement in the Indo-Pacific and Western Balkans, and joint efforts towards a just and lasting peace in the Middle East.

Why It Matters

The text frames deeper cooperation as key to defending multilateral institutions including the UN, ICC, WTO, NATO and major forums, and highlights Arctic cooperation, concern over militarisation and the need to safeguard Greenland’s autonomy while boosting energy and trade links such as CETA.

Next Step

MEPs urged the ten member states that have not yet ratified CETA to do so before its ten-year provisional application anniversary in 2027.
