MEPs resume work on Turnberry trade proposals

Process in Brief

Shadow rapporteurs in the European Parliament’s International Trade Committee agreed to resume work on the two legislative proposals linked to implementation of the Turnberry deal. They indicated that a vote could potentially take place at the committee’s next meeting on Tuesday 24 February.

What Is at Stake

The proposals follow a 2025 EU‑US political agreement and an August 2025 joint statement that outlined an EU‑US Framework Agreement, and the Commission subsequently published two legislative proposals to implement certain tariff aspects. The International Trade Committee is responsible for steering the legislation through Parliament and for leading negotiations with EU governments on customs duties for goods imports from the United States, and members tied further progress to the United States respecting the Union’s territorial integrity and sovereignty while agreeing to include threats to essential security interests as grounds to suspend tariff preferences.

Timeline

A possible committee vote on the proposals was mentioned for Tuesday 24 February.
