Commission acts against unfairly traded imports of candles from China

Key development

The Commission imposed definitive anti-dumping duties of 56% to 60% on imports into the EU of candles, tapers and the like from the People’s Republic of China. The duties were imposed on 26 January and will be in place for five years.

Context

An investigation found that imports of candles, tapers and the like from China were entering the EU at dumped prices and causing injury to the EU industry, which employs some 9,000 people in around 80 companies. This finding led to the trade defence action.

Details

The EU market is estimated at 620,000 tonnes worth around €1,700 million, with imports amounting to 170,000 tonnes and about 140,000 tonnes originating in China. Candles produce heat and light and are widely used for interior decoration or for outdoor decorative purposes.

Next steps

The measures are definitive and will remain in force for five years. Further details are published in the official Definitive Measures notice and on the EU Trade Defence Policy pages.
